The maximum value of E in an electromagnetic wave is equal to 27 V m⁻¹. Thus the maximum value of B is _______.

Asked in GSEB Board March 2016 · E0 = cB0 and E/B = c

Answer: (3) 9×10⁻⁸ T

Step-by-step solution

Given: E₀=27 V m⁻¹.

Idea: the two amplitudes in an electromagnetic wave are not independent. Maxwell's equations force E₀=cB₀.

B₀=(E₀)/c=(27)/(3×10⁸)=9×10⁻⁸ T.

So the maximum magnetic field is 9×10⁻⁸ T. Notice how small that is in SI units, which is why the magnetic side of a light wave is so hard to detect.

Why the other options are wrong
