The maximum value of E in an electromagnetic wave is equal to 1.8 V m⁻¹. Thus the maximum value of B is ______.

Asked in GSEB Board March 2019 · E0 = cB0 and E/B = c

Answer: (3) 6×10⁻⁹ T

Step-by-step solution

Given: E₀ = 1.8 V m⁻¹ in an electromagnetic wave in free space.

Idea: the two amplitudes of a plane electromagnetic wave are locked together by (E₀)/(B₀) = c, so B₀ = (E₀)/c.

B₀ = (1.8)/(3×10⁸) = 6×10⁻⁹ T.

So the maximum value of B is 6×10⁻⁹ T.

Note how small the magnetic amplitude is in SI units; this is why the magnetic half of a light wave is so easy to overlook.

Why the other options are wrong
