The electric potentials at two points (0, 3) mm and (0, 4) mm in a region where the electric field is ⃗E = 20 N C⁻¹ ̂i are V_A and V_B respectively. Then,

Asked in GSEB Board March 2022 · Relation between field and potential

Answer: (3) V_A = V_B

Step-by-step solution

Given: ⃗E = 20 N C⁻¹ ̂i; A at (0, 3) mm and B at (0, 4) mm.

Idea: V_B - V_A = -⃗E·Δ⃗r.

The displacement from A to B is Δ⃗r = (1 mm) ̂j, which is perpendicular to ̂i.

So ⃗E·Δ⃗r = 0 and V_B - V_A = 0.

Both points lie on the equipotential plane x = 0 (in a uniform field the equipotentials are planes perpendicular to ⃗E).

So V_A = V_B.
