The work done to move a unit test charge on an equipotential surface is _______.

Asked in GSEB Board July 2022 · Equipotential surfaces and V-r graphs

Answer: (3) zero

Step-by-step solution

Idea: the work done in moving a charge q between two points is W = q(V_f - Vᵢ).

All points of an equipotential surface have the same potential, so V_f = Vᵢ.

W = q×0 = 0 for any path lying on the surface.

(Equivalently, ⃗E is normal to the surface, so the electric force is perpendicular to every step.)

So the work done is zero.

Why the other options are wrong
