Equipotential surfaces at a very large distance from a collection of charges whose total sum is not zero are approximately ______.

Asked in GSEB Board March 2023 · Equipotential surfaces and V-r graphs

Answer: (3) spheres

Step-by-step solution

Idea: at a distance r much larger than the size of the collection, all the charges are at practically the same distance from the field point.

The potential is then V ≈ 1/(4πε₀)(Qₙₑₜ)/r, the same as for a single point charge Qₙₑₜ eq 0.

This V depends only on r, so V = constant means r = constant.

So the far-away equipotential surfaces are approximately spheres centred on the collection.
