A student is asked to connect four cells of emf ε each and internal resistance r each in series (helping condition). By mistake he connects one cell in the opposite way. What will be the effective emf and effective internal resistance?

Asked in GSEB Board July 2018 · Combination of cells

Answer: (2) 2ε, 4r

Step-by-step solution

Given: four identical cells (ε, r) in series, one of them connected the wrong way round.

Idea: in series the emfs add with sign, a reversed cell counting as -ε; internal resistances always add, whichever way a cell faces.

Effective emf: ε + ε + ε - ε = 2ε.

Effective internal resistance: r + r + r + r = 4r.

So the combination behaves as a single cell of emf 2ε and internal resistance 4r.
