Asked in GSEB Board March 2023 · Combination of cells
Given: cells (ε₁, r₁) and (ε₂, r₂) in parallel between A and B with their + terminals joined, and ε₂ > ε₁.
Idea: the equivalent emf is the voltage V_A - V_B across the pair when no external current is drawn.
With no load, a current i = (ε₂ - ε₁)/(r₁ + r₂) circulates round the loop, charging cell 1.
V_A - V_B = ε₁ + ir₁ = (ε₁r₂ + ε₂r₁)/(r₁ + r₂) = ε_eq.
This is an average of ε₁ and ε₂ with positive weights r₂ and r₁, so ε₁ < ε_eq < ε₂, and its value depends on r₁ and r₂.
So the correct statement is ε₁ < ε_eq < ε₂.
