The storage battery of a car has an emf of 12 V. If the internal resistance of the battery is 0.4 Ω, what is the maximum current that can be drawn from the battery?

Asked in GSEB Board August 2020 · Terminal voltage and internal resistance

Answer: (2) 30 A

Step-by-step solution

Given: ε=12 V, r=0.4 Ω.

Idea: I=ε/(R+r) is largest when the external resistance is zero, because then only the internal resistance limits the current.

Iₘₐₓ=ε/r.

Iₘₐₓ=(12)/(0.4)=30 A.
