The drift velocity of an electron is v_d in a conductor of area of cross-section A and carries a current I. Now, the area of cross-section and current flowing through the conductor are double, then new drift velocity of the electron is ________.

Asked in GUJCET 2025 · Drift velocity, mobility and current density

Answer: (4) v_d

Step-by-step solution

Idea: I = neAv_d, so v_d = I/(neA); the material is the same, so n and e do not change.

New drift velocity: v_d' = (2I)/(ne (2A)) = I/(neA).

The two factors of 2 cancel, so v_d' = v_d: the current density I/A, and with it the drift velocity, is unchanged.
