A ring of radius R and linear charge density λ on its surface is performing rotational motion about an axis perpendicular to its plane. If the angular velocity of the ring is ω, how much current is constituted by the ring?

Asked in RS Academy GUJCET booklet · Current and charge flow

Answer: (1) Rωλ

Step-by-step solution

Given: ring of radius R, charge per unit length λ, angular velocity ω.

Total charge on the ring: Q = λ×2π R.

Time for one revolution: T = (2π)/ω. In each revolution the whole charge Q passes any fixed point.

Current: I = Q/T = (2π Rλ ω)/(2π) = Rωλ.

Check: the charge passing a point per second is λ v, with v = ω R, which gives the same I = Rωλ.
