Step-by-step solution

Idea: the transformation ratio is r = (Nₛ)/(Nₚ), and for an ideal transformer (Vₛ)/(Vₚ) = (Nₛ)/(Nₚ) = r.

A step-down transformer gives a smaller output voltage: Vₛ < Vₚ.

So Nₛ < Nₚ, and r < 1.
