For a step-down transformer, which of the following is correct?

Asked in GUJCET 2016 · Transformers

Answer: (2) Output power < input power

Step-by-step solution

Idea: a step-down transformer has Nₛ<Nₚ, so (Vₛ)/(Vₚ)=(Nₛ)/(Nₚ)<1: the output voltage is less than the input voltage.

The two coils therefore do not have equal numbers of turns.

Power: a real transformer loses some energy, through I²R heating of the windings, eddy currents and hysteresis in the core, and flux leakage.

So the output power is less than the input power; only an idealised, loss-free transformer would make them equal.

So the correct statement is: output power < input power.
