A flask contains argon and chlorine in the ratio of 2 : 1 by mass. The temperature of the mixture is 27°C. The ratio of root mean square speed of the molecules of the two gases ((v^Arᵣₘₛ)/(v^Clᵣₘₛ)) is: (Atomic mass of argon = 40.0 u and molecular mass of chlorine = 70.0 u)

Asked in NEET 2026 · Speed with temperature and molar mass

Answer: (2) (√7)/2

Step-by-step solution

vᵣₘₛ=√(3RT)/M, and both gases are at the same temperature.

(v^Arᵣₘₛ)/(v^Clᵣₘₛ)=√(M_Cl)/(M_Ar)=√(70)/(40)=√7/4.

=(√7)/2. The 2 : 1 mass ratio does not enter.
