Two spherical balls having equal masses with radius 5 cm each are thrown upwards along the same vertical direction at an interval of 3 s with the same initial velocity of 35 m s⁻¹, then these balls collide at a height of ______ m. (take g = 10 m s⁻²)

Asked in JEE Main 26th Aug 1st Shift 2021 · Two bodies under gravity

Answer: 50

Step-by-step solution

y₁ = 35t - 5t²; y₂ = 35(t - 3) - 5(t - 3)² for t ≥ 3.

y₁ = y₂: 35t - 5t² = 35t - 105 - 5t² + 30t - 45 ⇒ 30t = 150 ⇒ t = 5 s.

Height = 35×5 - 5×25 = 175 - 125 = 50 m (the 5 cm radii shift this by centimetres only).
