Water drops fall from a tap on the floor, 5 m below, at regular intervals of time, the first drop strikes the floor when the sixth drop begins to fall. The height at which the fourth drop will be from ground, at the instant when the first drop strikes the ground is ______ m. (g = 10 m/s²)

Asked in JEE Main 28th Jan 1st Shift 2026 · Successive drops

Answer: (3) 4.2

Step-by-step solution

Let the interval between drops be τ. When the sixth drop starts, the first has been falling for 5τ.

First drop: 5 = 1/2×10×(5τ)² = 125τ² ⇒ τ = 0.2 s.

The fourth drop has been falling for 2τ = 0.4 s: distance = 5×0.4² = 0.8 m.

Height above the floor = 5 - 0.8 = 4.2 m.
