An air bubble in a glass slab of refractive index 1.5 is 5 cm deep when viewed from one face and 2 cm deep when viewed from the opposite face. The thickness of the slab is ______ cm. (Hint: use (h')/h = (n₂)/(n₁).)

Asked in RS Academy GUJCET booklet · Snell's law, slabs and apparent depth

Answer: (1) 10.5

Step-by-step solution

Given: a glass slab of refractive index 1.5; the bubble looks 5 cm deep from one face and 2 cm deep from the other.

Idea: looking into a denser medium makes everything seem nearer, by the factor n, so real depth = n× apparent depth.

Measured from the first face, the bubble is really 1.5× 5 = 7.5 cm inside the glass.

Measured from the opposite face, it is really 1.5× 2 = 3 cm inside.

Those two real distances run from opposite faces to the same bubble, so together they span the whole slab.

Thickness = 7.5+3 = 10.5 cm.

Why the other options are wrong
