The wavelength of a monochromatic light in vacuum is λ. It travels from vacuum to a medium of absolute refractive index μ. The ratio of the wavelength of the incident wave to that of the refracted wave is ______.

Asked in GUJCET 2007 · Snell's law, slabs and apparent depth

Answer: (3) μ : 1

Step-by-step solution

Given: wavelength λ in vacuum, medium of absolute refractive index μ.

Idea: refraction changes the speed of the wave but never its frequency, so the wavelength changes in the same ratio as the speed.

Speed in the medium: v=c/μ.

The frequency is the same on both sides: u=c/λ=v/(λₘ).

So λₘ=v/u=λ/μ.

Hence incident : refracted =λ:λ/μ=μ:1.
