The amplitude of the magnetic field part of a harmonic electromagnetic wave in vacuum is B₀ = 720 nT. What is the amplitude of the electric field part of the wave?

Asked in GSEB Board July 2023 · E0 = cB0 and E/B = c

Answer: (1) 216 N C⁻¹

Step-by-step solution

Given: B₀ = 720 nT = 720×10⁻⁹ T, wave in vacuum.

Idea: in a plane electromagnetic wave the amplitudes are locked together by E₀ = cB₀.

E₀ = (3×10⁸)(720×10⁻⁹).

E₀ = 3×720×10⁻¹ = 216 N C⁻¹.

So the electric amplitude is 216 N C⁻¹, which is the same thing as 216 V m⁻¹.
