By which one of the following equations are the magnitudes of the electric and magnetic fields in an electromagnetic wave related?

Asked in GSEB Board July 2022 · E0 = cB0 and E/B = c

Answer: (2) B₀ = (E₀)/C

Step-by-step solution

Idea: in a plane electromagnetic wave the two fields rise and fall in step, and their amplitudes keep a fixed ratio equal to the speed of the wave: (E₀)/(B₀) = C.

This comes straight out of Maxwell's equations for the wave, and it is why one number is enough to get either field from the other.

Rearranged for the magnetic amplitude, B₀ = (E₀)/C.

Equivalently E₀ = CB₀: in SI units the electric amplitude is about 3×10⁸ times the magnetic one, which is why the magnetic part looks so small.

So the relation is B₀ = (E₀)/C.
