The capacitance of a parallel plate capacitor formed by circular plates of diameter 4.0 cm is equal to the capacitance of a sphere of diameter 200 cm. Find the distance between the two plates.

Asked in RS Academy GUJCET booklet · Capacitance of a conductor and a capacitor

Answer: (2) 1×10⁻⁴ m

Step-by-step solution

Given: plate radius r=2.0 cm=0.02 m; sphere radius R=100 cm=1 m.

Idea: set the two capacitances equal and solve for the gap d.

Parallel plates: C=(ε₀π r²)/d. Isolated sphere: C=4πε₀R.

(ε₀π r²)/d=4πε₀R gives d=(r²)/(4R).

d=((0.02)²)/(4×1)=(4×10⁻⁴)/4=1×10⁻⁴ m, a tenth of a millimetre.
