What is the self-inductance of a solenoid of length 31.4 cm, area of cross-section 10⁻³ m² and total number of turns 10³?

Asked in GUJCET 2011 · Coil geometry, cores and combinations

Answer: (1) 4 mH

Step-by-step solution

Given: l = 31.4 cm = 0.314 m; A = 10⁻³ m²; N = 10³.

Idea: for a long solenoid, L = (μ₀N²A)/l.

N² = 10⁶, so μ₀N²A = 4π×10⁻⁷ × 10⁶ × 10⁻³ = 4π×10⁻⁴.

L = (4π×10⁻⁴)/(0.314) = (4 × 3.14×10⁻⁴)/(0.314) = 4×10⁻³ H.

The length 31.4 cm is chosen so that the π cancels neatly.

So L = 4 mH.
