Asked in GUJCET 2024 · Charged cylinder and line charge
Given: E = 9×10⁴ N/C at r = 2 cm = 0.02 m, and K = 1/(4πε₀) = 9×10⁹ Nm²/C².
Idea: an infinite line charge has cylindrical symmetry, so Gauss's law gives E = λ/(2πε₀r), which in terms of K is E = (2Kλ)/r.
Rearranging for the unknown, λ = (Er)/(2K).
λ = ((9×10⁴)(0.02))/(2×9×10⁹) = (1.8×10³)/(1.8×10¹⁰)
λ = 1×10⁻⁷ C/m
Since 1 μC = 10⁻⁶ C, this is 0.1 μC/m. Converting the 2 cm to metres before substituting is the whole difficulty here.
