A uniform conductor of resistance R is cut into 20 equal pieces. Half of them are joined in series and the remaining are connected in parallel. If the two combinations are joined in series, the effective resistance of all the pieces is ______.

Answer: (3) (101R)/(200)

Step-by-step solution

Given: resistance R cut into 20 equal pieces, each of resistance R/(20).

Idea: find the resistance of each group, then add the two groups in series.

Series group: 10×R/(20) = R/2.

Parallel group: ten equal resistors R/(20) in parallel give 1/(10)×R/(20) = R/(200).

Total: R/2 + R/(200) = (100R + R)/(200) = (101R)/(200).

So the effective resistance is (101R)/(200).
