The distance of the closest approach of an alpha particle fired at a nucleus with kinetic energy K is r₀. The distance of the closest approach when the α particle is fired at the same nucleus with kinetic energy 2K will be

Asked in GUJCET 2015 · Distance of closest approach

Answer: (2) (r₀)/2

Step-by-step solution

Idea: at the closest approach the α particle is momentarily at rest, so all its kinetic energy has become electrostatic potential energy.

K=1/(4πε₀)((2e)(Ze))/(r₀), so r₀=(2Ze²)/(4πε₀K).

Everything except K is fixed (same nucleus, same particle), so r₀∝1/K.

Doubling K halves the distance: the new closest approach is (r₀)/2.
