The alternating flux in the iron core induces emfs in the core itself, and these drive circulating eddy currents.
The eddy currents heat the core and waste energy.
A laminated core is built from thin iron sheets insulated from one another by varnish or an oxide layer.
The insulating layers cut the paths the eddy currents would follow, so the eddy currents and their heating become very small.
So the core is laminated to minimise the effect of eddy currents.
