If Pₒ is the output power and Pᵢ is the input power of a real step-up transformer, then

Asked in GSEB Board March 2022 · Transformers

Answer: (1) Pₒ<Pᵢ

Step-by-step solution

A transformer only transfers energy from the primary circuit to the secondary circuit.

In an ideal transformer nothing is lost, so Pₒ=Pᵢ.

A real transformer loses energy as heat in the windings (I²R), as eddy currents and hysteresis in the core, and through flux leakage.

Stepping up raises the voltage but lowers the current, so it does not change this.

So for a real transformer Pₒ<Pᵢ.
