A 15 μF capacitor is connected to a 220 V, 50 Hz a.c. source. The value of the capacitive reactance is ______.

Asked in GSEB Board March 2020 · Reactance and frequency

Answer: (3) 212 Ω

Step-by-step solution

Given: C=15 μF=15×10⁻⁶ F and f=50 Hz. The 220 V is not needed for the reactance.

Idea: a capacitor opposes a.c. through its reactance X_C=1/(ω C)=1/(2π fC).

2π fC=2×3.14×50×15×10⁻⁶=4.71×10⁻³.

X_C=1/(4.71×10⁻³)≈212 Ω.

So the capacitive reactance is about 212 Ω.
