An alternating voltage given as V = 200√2 sin(100t) V is applied to a capacitor of 5 μF. The current reading of the ammeter will be equal to ______ mA.

Asked in GSEB Board July 2018 · Reactance and frequency

Answer: (4) 100

Step-by-step solution

Given: V₀ = 200√2 V, ω = 100 rad s⁻¹, C = 5 μF = 5×10⁻⁶ F.

Idea: an a.c. ammeter reads the rms current, Iᵣₘₛ = (Vᵣₘₛ)/(X_C).

Vᵣₘₛ = (V₀)/(√2) = 200 V and X_C = 1/(ω C) = 1/(100×5×10⁻⁶) = 2000 Ω.

Iᵣₘₛ = (200)/(2000) = 0.1 A = 100 mA.
