If in an A.C. L-C series circuit X_C>X_L, then the potential _____.

Asked in GUJCET 2019 · Phase relationships and phasors

Answer: (1) lags behind the current by π/2

Step-by-step solution

Idea: in a series L-C circuit the same current flows through both; V_L leads it by π/2 and V_C lags it by π/2.

These two voltages are opposite, so the net voltage is I(X_C-X_L), in the direction of V_C when X_C>X_L.

With no resistance, the net reactance is the whole impedance, so the phase difference is a full π/2 and the circuit acts as a net capacitor.

So the potential lags behind the current by π/2.
