If the angular frequency of the A.C. source used in an L-C-R circuit is decreased, then the inductive reactance _____ and the capacitive reactance ______.

Asked in GUJCET 2016 · Reactance and frequency

Answer: (3) decrease, increase

Step-by-step solution

Idea: X_L=ω L is directly proportional to ω, while X_C=1/(ω C) is inversely proportional to ω.

When ω decreases, X_L decreases.

When ω decreases, X_C increases (in the limit ω→0, i.e. d.c., the capacitor blocks completely).

So the inductive reactance decreases and the capacitive reactance increases.

Why the other options are wrong
