An alternating voltage V=100√2 sin(100t) V is applied to a capacitor of 1 μF. The current reading of the ammeter will be equal to ______.

Asked in GUJCET 2015 · Reactance and frequency

Answer: (2) 10 mA

Step-by-step solution

Given: V=100√2 sin(100t), so V₀=100√2 V and ω=100 rad s⁻¹; C=1 μF=10⁻⁶ F.

Idea: an a.c. ammeter reads the r.m.s. current.

Vᵣₘₛ=(V₀)/(√2)=100 V.

X_C=1/(ω C)=1/(100×10⁻⁶)=10⁴ Ω.

Iᵣₘₛ=(Vᵣₘₛ)/(X_C)=(100)/(10⁴)=0.01 A=10 mA.

So the ammeter reads 10 mA.
