At time t=0 s the voltage of an A.C. generator starts from 0 V and becomes 2 V at time t=1/(100π) s. The voltage keeps on increasing up to 100 V, after which it starts to decrease. Find the frequency of the generator.

Asked in GUJCET 2008 · Instantaneous values and timing

Answer: (2) 1 Hz

Step-by-step solution

Idea: the generator voltage is V=V₀ sin ω t. It starts from zero, and its largest value is the peak, so V₀=100 V.

At t=1/(100π) s: 2=100 sin ω t, so sin ω t=0.02.

The angle is small, so sin ω t≈ω t and ω t=0.02.

ω=0.02×100π=2π rad s⁻¹.

f=ω/(2π)=(2π)/(2π)=1 Hz.

So the frequency of the generator is 1 Hz.
