The peak value of an alternating current is 5 A and its frequency is 60 Hz. Find its rms value and the time taken to reach the peak value of the current starting from zero.

Asked in GUJCET 2011 · RMS and mean values

Answer: (1) 3.536 A; 4.167 ms

Step-by-step solution

Given: I₀=5 A and f=60 Hz.

R.m.s. value: Iᵣₘₛ=(I₀)/(√2)=5/(1.414)=3.536 A.

Time period: T=1/f=1/(60) s=16.67 ms.

Idea: I=I₀ sin ω t rises from zero to the peak in a quarter of a cycle, when ω t=π/2.

t=T/4=1/(240) s=4.167 ms.

So the answer is 3.536 A and 4.167 ms.
