Diameter of human eye lens is 2 mm. What will be the minimum distance between two points to resolve them, which are situated at a distance of 50 m from eye? The wavelength of light is 5000 Å.

Asked in CBSE AIPMT 2002 · Human eye and defects of vision

Answer: (3) 1.25 cm

Step-by-step solution

Given: eye lens diameter d=2 mm=2×10⁻³ m, distance D=50 m, and λ=5000 Å =5×10⁻⁷ m.

Idea: the eye's angular limit of resolution is of order λ/d, and two points y apart at distance D subtend y/D.

y/D=λ/d

y=(λ D)/d=(5×10⁻⁷×50)/(2×10⁻³)

y=1.25×10⁻² m=1.25 cm
