The Sun rotates around its centre once in 27 days. What will be the period of revolution if the Sun were to expand to twice its present radius without any external influence? Assume the Sun to be a sphere of uniform density.

Asked in NEET 2025 · Conservation of angular momentum

Answer: (2) 108 days

Step-by-step solution

Given: T=27 days, radius doubled, mass unchanged, no external torque.

Idea: with no external torque the angular momentum L=Iω is conserved.

For a uniform sphere I=2/5MR², so at fixed M, I∝ R².

Iω=I'ω' with I'=4I gives ω'=ω/4.

T=(2π)/ω, so T'=4T.

T'=4×27=108 days.
