A thermodynamic system is taken from an original state D to an intermediate state E by the linear process shown in the figure. Its volume is then reduced to the original value from E to F by an isobaric process. The total work done by the gas from D to E to F will be

Asked in JEE Main 29th July 2nd Shift 2022 · Work as the Area of a Closed Loop

Figure: Work as the Area of a Closed Loop
Answer: (2) 450 J

Step-by-step solution

D to E is a straight line on the P-V diagram, so its work is the area of the

trapezium under it; E to F is isobaric, so its work is PΔ V.

Reading both off the axes and adding, with E to F a compression,

W=W_DE+W_EF=1350-900=450 J.

Why the other options are wrong
