A certain amount of gas of volume V at 27°C and pressure 2×10⁷ N/m² expands isothermally until its volume is doubled. It then expands adiabatically until its volume is doubled again. The final pressure of the gas will be (use γ=1.5)

Asked in JEE Main 25th July 1st Shift 2022 · Comparing Two Processes

Answer: (2) 3.536×10⁶ Pa

Step-by-step solution

Isothermal first: P halves as the volume doubles, so P=10⁷ N/m²

at volume 2V.

Then adiabatic from 2V to 4V with γ=1.5:

P_f=10⁷(1/2)^1.5=(10⁷)/(2√2)=(10⁷)/(2.828)=3.536×10⁶ Pa.
