Given below are two statements.
Statement I : An elevator can go up or down with uniform speed when its weight is balanced with the tension of its cable.
Statement II : Force exerted by the floor of an elevator on the foot of a person standing on it is more than his/her weight when the elevator goes down with increasing speed.
In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below.

Asked in JEE Main 24th Jan 1st Shift 2023 · Lifts, spring balances and apparent weight

Answer: (2) Statement I is true but statement II is false.

Step-by-step solution

Idea: uniform speed means zero acceleration; 'down with increasing speed' means the acceleration points down.

Statement I. Uniform speed, up or down, is zero acceleration, so the net force is zero and the cable tension equals the weight. True.

Statement II. Going down with increasing speed, the acceleration a is downward. For the person,

mg-N=ma, so N=m(g-a)<mg.

The floor pushes with less than the person's weight — this is the light-headed feeling as a lift starts down. Statement II is false.

So statement I is true and statement II is false.

Why the other options are wrong
