Given below are two statements:
Statement I: For a planet, if the ratio of mass of the planet to its radius increases, escape velocity also increases from the planet.
Statement II: Escape velocity is independent of the radius of the planet.

Answer: (2) Statement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect.

Step-by-step solution

Write the escape speed and read off what it depends on: vₑ=√(2GM)/R=√2G·M/R.

The whole expression is controlled by the single combination M/R, so if that ratio rises vₑ rises. Statement I is right.

The same formula shows R very much matters, so escape speed is not independent of radius. Statement II is wrong.
