Two capacitors C₁ and C₂ are charged to 120 V and 200 V respectively. It is found that by connecting them together the potential on each one can be made zero. Then

Asked in JEE Main 2013 · Redistribution of charge

Answer: (3) 3C₁=5C₂

Step-by-step solution

Both potentials can end at zero only if the plates joined together carry equal and opposite charges that annihilate.

So the capacitors are connected with the positive plate of one to the negative plate of the other, and the condition is Q₁=Q₂.

C₁(120)=C₂(200).

Dividing by 40: 3C₁=5C₂.
