A rigid dipole undergoes simple harmonic motion about its centre in the presence of an electric field ⃗E₁=E₀̂i. If another electric field ⃗E₂=2E₀(̂j+̂k) is introduced into the system, what will be the percentage change in the frequency of the oscillation (approximately)?

Asked in JEE Main 4th April 2nd Shift 2026 · Oscillation of a dipole

Answer: (1) 73%

Step-by-step solution

For a rigid dipole of moment p and moment of inertia I in a field E, f=1/(2π)√(pE)/I, so f∝√E.

The two fields are perpendicular to each other, so the resultant is ⃗E=E₀̂i+2E₀̂j+2E₀̂k.

|⃗E|=E₀√1+4+4=3E₀.

(f₂)/(f₁)=√(3E₀)/(E₀)=√3=1.732.

The change is (1.732-1)×100≈73%.
