The value of current i₁ flowing from A to C in the circuit diagram is [Figure: an 8 V cell connected directly between A and C. A to B: 2 Ω; B to C: 2 Ω; A to D: 2 Ω; D to C: 2 Ω; B to D: 5 Ω and 5 Ω in series. A separate straight branch from A to C has 4 Ω and 4 Ω in series and carries i₁; it crosses the B-D branch without a junction.]

Figure: Wheatstone bridge
Answer: (4) 1 A

Step-by-step solution

The cell (no internal resistance) holds A and C at a 8 V difference.

The direct branch A to C has 4+4=8 Ω and does not touch the B-D wire.

i₁=8/8=1 A.

(The bridge part is balanced, 2/2=2/2, and does not affect this branch.)
