The phase difference between the alternating current and emf is π/2. Which of the following cannot be the constituent of the circuit?

Asked in AIEEE 2005 · Phase relationships and phasors

Answer: (4) R, L

Step-by-step solution

A 90° phase requires a purely reactive circuit (no resistance).

L alone, C alone and a pure LC combination all give 90°; an R-L circuit has resistance, so its phase is less than 90°.

Hence R,L cannot produce a 90° phase.
