In a two-slit experiment the screen is placed one metre away. When light of wavelength 500 nm is used the fringe separation is 0.5 mm. The distance between the two slits is ________ mm.

Asked in GSEB Board July 2021 · Fringe width and fringe position

Answer: (3) 1

Step-by-step solution

Given: D = 1 m, λ = 500 nm = 5×10⁻⁷ m, and a fringe separation β = 0.5 mm = 5×10⁻⁴ m.

Idea: the separation of neighbouring fringes is the fringe width β = (λ D)/d, so the unknown slit separation comes from rearranging it.

d = (λ D)/β = ((5×10⁻⁷)(1))/(5×10⁻⁴).

d = 1×10⁻³ m.

The two slits are 1 mm apart.
