A person finds that the Sun's rays reflected by the still water of a lake are polarised. If the refractive index of water is 1.327, the Sun will be seen at an angle of ______ with the horizon.

Asked in GSEB Board July 2017 · Brewster's law and polarisation by reflection

Answer: (3) 37°

Step-by-step solution

Given: μ=1.327 for the water, and the reflected sunlight is found to be completely polarised.

Idea: complete polarisation on reflection happens at Brewster's angle, tan iₚ=μ, with iₚ measured from the normal -- and the normal to a still lake points straight up.

iₚ=tan⁻¹1.327=53°.

The incident ray therefore makes 53° with the vertical.

The angle it makes with the horizontal is 90°-53°.

So the Sun is seen 37° above the horizon.
