The refractive index of water is 4/3. What is the speed of light in water?

Asked in GSEB Board August 2020 · Snell's law, slabs and apparent depth

Answer: (2) 2.25×10⁸ m s⁻¹

Step-by-step solution

Given: n=4/3 for water, and c=3×10⁸ m s⁻¹.

Idea: the refractive index is the factor by which the medium slows light, n=c/v, so v=c/n.

Dividing by 4/3 is the same as multiplying by 3/4: v=3×10⁸×3/4.

So v=2.25×10⁸ m s⁻¹, three quarters of the vacuum speed.
