Depth of a completely filled well is 11 m and the refractive index of water is 1.33. If viewed normally from top, by how much height would the bottom of the well appear to be shifted up?

Asked in GSEB Board March 2019 · Snell's law, slabs and apparent depth

Answer: (1) 2.73 m

Step-by-step solution

Given: d=11 m, n=1.33, viewed along the normal.

Idea: through water the bottom appears at d/n, so it seems lifted by d-d/n=d(1-1/n).

1/(1.33)=0.752, so the bracket is 1-0.752=0.248.

Shift =11× 0.248=2.73 m

Checking the other way: apparent depth =(11)/(1.33)=8.27 m, and 11-8.27=2.73 m.

Why the other options are wrong
