The binding energy per nucleon for deuteron ²₁H nucleus is 1.1 MeV and that for ⁴₂He nucleus is 7 MeV. If two deuteron nuclei fuse to form ⁴₂He nucleus, how many energy will produced?

Asked in RS Academy GUJCET booklet · Energy released in fission and fusion

Answer: (2) 23.6 MeV

Step-by-step solution

Given: 1.1 MeV per nucleon for ²₁H (2 nucleons each) and 7 MeV per nucleon for ⁴₂He (4 nucleons).

Idea: energy released = total binding energy after - total binding energy before. Each nucleus's total is its binding energy per nucleon times its own nucleon number.

Before, two deuterons: 2×(2×1.1)=4.4 MeV.

After, one helium-4: 4×7=28 MeV.

Energy released =28-4.4=23.6 MeV.
