In the process of forming helium from hydrogen, the mass defect is 0.5%. What is the energy produced when helium is formed from 1 kg hydrogen? (1 kWh=36×10⁵ J)

Asked in RS Academy GUJCET booklet · Energy released in fission and fusion

Answer: (3) 1.25×10⁸ kWh

Step-by-step solution

Given: 1 kg of hydrogen, a mass defect of 0.5%, and 1 kWh=36×10⁵=3.6×10⁶ J.

Idea: only the mass that goes missing becomes energy, through E=Δ mc².

Δ m=0.5% of 1 kg=5×10⁻³ kg.

E=5×10⁻³×9×10¹⁶=4.5×10¹⁴ J.

In kilowatt-hours: (4.5×10¹⁴)/(3.6×10⁶)=1.25×10⁸ kWh.
