A galvanometer coil has resistance of 45 Ω, it shows full scale deflection for a current of 2 mA. What is the required series resistance to convert the galvanometer into a voltmeter of range 0 to 3 V?

Asked in GSEB Board July 2023 · Conversion to ammeter and voltmeter

Answer: (1) 1455 Ω

Step-by-step solution

Given: G=45 Ω, I_g=2 mA=2×10⁻³ A, full-scale reading V=3 V.

Idea: a voltmeter is the galvanometer with a large resistance in series, chosen so that exactly the full-scale current flows when the full-scale voltage is put across the pair.

V=I_g(G+R)

G+R=3/(2×10⁻³)=1500 Ω

R=1500-45=1455 Ω.
